This paper investigated how phonological change in verbs leads to change in communicative intentions in Bengali. We conducted (a) a Likert scale experiment (LS) and (b) online recognition of intention probes (reaction time) to record the degree of intention ascribed to the form of the verb and the underlying psycholinguistic process involved in the recognition of that intention. The LS results show that the order and request acts are higher for our hypothesised category. In the Analysis of Variance test, we found a strong effect of speech act on the response (p < 0.0002, F = 47.78). RT experiment results demonstrated that order intention recognition time for Category A was 2.50s (Accuracy = 71.4%), while request intention recognition time for Category B was 3.36s (Accuracy = 70.69%).
