The influence of music education and training on SLA

Abstract

Although music education is one of the human activities that requires the integration of all human senses and the involvement of all cognitive processes—sensory, perceptual, and cognitive learning, memory, emotion, and auditory and motor processes—music has tended to figure only marginally in approaches to second-language acquisition. To explore the extent to which music education influences second-language acquisition, musicians and non-musicians were asked to reproduce thrice-repeated sentences in six languages. Musicians outperformed non-musicians in the study. From the results, it appears that the influence of musical expertise extends beyond music processing to speech processing.
