Abstract

This paper analyses recordings from 22 native speakers of Lǚliáng Jìn Chinese to investigate contrasting patterns of dipping tones in multi-dipping-tone systems. The findings reveal 13 cases in which a three-dipping-tone contrast is maintained, while nine cases display a two-dipping-tone contrast. Within these systems, dipping tones differ in contour shape, duration, and phonation, allowing contrasts between tones to be preserved. The study highlights the complexity and variability of tonal distinctions in Lǚliáng Jìn Chinese.
